Come on guys, smile!Spent most of the weekend with DD and the boys. Saturday we went to Ontario Mills where both budding guitarists played just about every guitar at Sam Ash while DD and I checked out all the new merchandise at Cost Plus World Market. They've got Christmas decorations out and everything looked so fresh and beautiful. DD is excited about Christmas this year - the first in many years that she will be able to spend with her boys as a clean and sober mom. And she's looking forward to making lefse, a Norwegian flatbread that is a must for Thanksgiving and Christmas. DH is even insisting that we will have lutefisk this year - cod prepared with lye. We boil it in cheesecloth (it would completely fall apart otherwise) and serve it with drawn butter. It smells terrible and sort of slips down your throat, chewing not really necessary. And it tastes as bad as it smells. Ah, tradition.
Later we went to lunch at Rainforest Cafe - shared a bruschetta appetizer and ordered Mogambo Shrimp, a pasta dish with shrimp, sundried tomatoes, peas and mushrooms all tossed with an Alfredo sauce. Delicious!
DGS is now interested in all things Italian. He bought a book and CD to learn how to speak Italian -which is obviously very important in SoCal where Spanish is a close (very close) second to English. I am going to rent the movie "Breaking Away" for him - the one about the bicycle racer with a love for all things Italian. It starred Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern. Next I'll find out if he's seen American Graffiti - another classic.

I am Italian....we went to Italy in 2004 and traveled from Rome to Tuscany down to Sorrento then to Sicily to find my "roots" back to Naples (awful place) and then home from Rome. It is a wonderful country full of ancient history and beautiful ruins. The poeple are so alive and full of fun, the language is like music. I bought a set of CD's to try and learn the language and thru a fluke met a girl from Italy and actually took lessons. I am too old to learn a second language and the only word I remembered but saved us some pretty heavy misery was the one for FERRY. Tell DGS I said Ciao.
I wondered if you'd been to Italy. After reading Eat, Pray, Love I was thoroughly enchanted with Italy. My best friend in school was a tall, blonde Italian - her home was always full of delicious smells and loud voices. And DGS says Ciao to you.
Now, see, I was going to suggest Rosie as the one to talk to re: the Italian Mafia. More experienced than the rest of us on that subject.
I have been going to this little Italian market in Canoga Park for years. About twenty. I have a box of italian sausage in the freezer from there. FANTASTIC!!! The grocery store has nothing on the Italian market. And the cannolis and napoleons! And Italian Ices! And the lasagna! These people know how to eat!
Might I also suggest Johnny Carino's, if you have one nearby. Good Italian food!
Do you want to do the lefse thing together this year? We could come to you this time! My lefse turner is waiting.
I am so glad that DD is doing so well. I know that is an answer to an awful lot of prayers. And you got your daughter back. So wonderful! I wonder if she realizes how many people were praying and worrying about her? SO happy for you all!
Getting together to make lefse would be fun! Probably should do it early enough so we have some for Thanksgiving.
